EXPERT'S OPINION:
Query: Is a 47cm head circumference for a 7 month boy normal? His head measurement has been increasing in the past two months. This have been his measurements since he was two weeks 35.6cm, 38.1 at 2months, 43.2 at 4 months and 46 at 6months. Should we be worry, he is a happy baby, growing fast he measures 28.5 inches and weights 20pounds.

Answer: Most common cause of large head in a well child at this age is benign external hydrocephalus { enlarged subarachnoid spaces due to large skull} and both or one parent will have a large head. If neurologic examination is entirely normal, this child needs to be closely followed. Vitamin D deficiency can cause macrocrania. Hydrocephalus and degenerative diseases like Alexanders and Canavans are unlikely in the absence of other abnormalities.
