Question Category: Blood testing
My 3yr old son recently had some blood tests done because he had a couple of episodes of "falling" asleep and was extremely difficult to wake up. I am a little concerned over his test results and am looking for information to see whether I should get a 2nd opinion. The dr told me he didnt "think" it was leukemia or a bone marrow problem, so that is why I am a little concerned. He said to come back in 3 months for him to be rechecked. his test results were as follows: WBC=6.7 ;GRA%42.2 #2.9; LYM% 51.1 #3.4;MON%6.7 #.4;RBC=4.59;HGB 11.9; HCT 35.4; MCV=77; MCH=25.9; MCHC=33.5;RDW=11.0;PLT=267; AND MPV=7. The dr told me to give him and iron fortified vit, which I did. My son seems fine, very active for the most part, except for the few days he had the "falling asleep" problem. Based on his blood test results, would anemia be the cause of all several of the tests being low? 90 days doesnt seem long, but if something is seriously wrong it could be critical time lost. I would appreciate any input you can provide. thank you, - Check out the answer

I had inquired about my then 3 yr old(now 4) son's blood test results back in feb. I have had the follow up tests recently and I am again aksing for your opinion. He was initially diagnosis w/ anemia and I had put him on an iron vitamin. In comparision, i will list the results from feb and the newest. I am a little confused by the WBC( or the breakdown of the WBC more specifically). feb 1st results/ april 25 results WBC 6.7 / 6.9 GRA% 42.2 #2.9/ 37.7 #2.7 LYM % 51.1 #3.4/ 52.6 #3.6 MON % 6.7 # .4 / 9.7 #.6 RBC 4.59 / 4.52 HGB 11.9 / 12.4 HCT 35.4 / 35.0 MCV 77 / 78 MCH 25.9 / 27.5 MCHC 33.5 / 35.4 RDW 11.0 / 11.7 PLT 267 / 209 MPV 7 / 7.4 By the reference that came on the test result sheet, everything that was low or high are still either low or high, but the HGB did improve by .5. I want to understand the GRA< LYM & MON results a little better. It seem the percentage levels are either low or high but the numbers following the "#" sign are in the normal range. Can you explain what this shows, since I am confused by it. The dr's nurse had called and said just to keep him on the vitamins and he acts fine and all and has had no more fatigue problems. Another question would be on the platelet counts, while still in the normal range, it had dropped by 58. i think if I knew more about the tests and how things can vary, I could understand a little better. Can you recommend any sites I can visit to give me a more detailed descriptions of these tests and what the results mean? I appreciate your time and help. Thank you  - Check out the answer
