If you suspect a child may have swallowed a small object but did not witness it and the child has no symptoms, what should you do? The child is less than 2 years old
Question Category : Ingestion of Foreign Body
My son swallowed a penny 12/19. We checked his stool for about 3 days and never saw any signs of the penny (we didn't take apart the stool - he's 4, almost 5). Today he spiked a fever (also took a nap) and is complaining of stomach pains. Could this be from the penny or just a stomach virus. He's displaying the classic signs of a virus, but he never complains about a tummy ache. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 4 yr old daughter swallowed a penny. How do I know if it went into her stomach or got stuck somewhere? Can it get stuck somewhere? She is not having any trouble breathing, speaking or drinking.

How do we know that a baby has ingested something?
Question Category : Ingestion of Foreign Body
My two year old daughter swallowed a penny on 6/30/04. She had an x-ray taken in the ER and it showed that the penny was in the stomach. They told us that the penny should pass without any problem and to watch her stools. As of today, July 6th, she still has not passed the penny. Took her in to the doctor again today and they did another x-ray. The x-ray showed that the penny is still in her stomach and hasn't moved much since the first x-ray. They say to wait another week and see what happens. She isn't showing any discomfort, she's eating and drinking fine, and having normal bowel movements. Will this penny cause any problems being in her stomach this long and is this an uncommon situation. Will the penny eventually pass or will she have to have it surgically removed. Please advise as I'm going nuts with all the waiting. We don't have any pediatric GI specialists here so I'm hoping you can give me a straight answer. Thanks!
Question Category : Ingestion of Foreign Body
My 9-year-old daughter ingested a quarter (we don't know when), which was detected in her stomach on x-ray 11/23. The ER doc (far from our home) told us to wait 3-5 days, examining each bowel movement, to see if it has passed. If not, he said, have her pediatrician do another x-ray, and possibly go into her stomach to get it out. Yesterday (day #4, the 26th), I called the pediatrician. The nurse there said to wait not for 3-5 days, but a week, and said they would not do another x-ray, and probably NOT remove the quarter unless she has stomach pain. I don't know who to believe. I talked to someone at a pediatric gastroenterologist's office at a local major hospital who would give me no advice on the phone. Still no quarter, and Now what??? Can you help? Thanks!

My 4.5 yr old son swelled a small silver ball 6 days ago and hasn't had a bowel movement in 7 days. Is it time to take him to his family doctor.
