This is a query regarding my 7 1/2 month old son. 27/09/01 Sudden fever with rigors - 2 episodes of rigors was diagnosed as Urinary tract infection Culture >100000 colonies of E coli. Treated with Ceftum 5ml bd x 10 days Inj Amikacin IM X 6 days. Urine culture at the end of the course was negative. He had fever 10 days back for 3 days which was treated with Ibugesic Plus. On the third day we gave urine for culture. After giving the sample he was asymptomatic with no fever. No antipyretic/antibiotic was given for next 2 days. Provisional culture report after 2 days showed 50,000 colonies of E coli. A repeat sample was given for culture at this time. The provisional report of this on the next day showed 10,000 colonies. The colonies reduced from 50000 to 10000 without any treatment. Anyways he has been put on Ceftum for 10 days (which he hates) and has been advised a 2 month prophylaxis with __-___Norflox DT 100mg x od x 2 months. A protocol of multiple periodic urine cultures for next 2 years has been advised. Confusing issues are is the second infection significant? Is such an extensive management necessary? Is MCU required? Is Norflox the right drug for Prophylaxis? Kindly advice at the earliest as he completes his 10 days of Ceftum on 8th November.

Our daughter is 4 1/2 and has a UTI, with symptoms being primarily frequent urination and abdominal pain. This is the first incident she has had. Would you recommend that she go for further testing (some of the more advanced tests you mention on your website) at this time or do you only recommend the further testing after recurrent incidents? What is the standard rule?

My 5 yrs. old daughter has been diagnosed with urinary tract infection. She was given Bacterium Suspension antibiotics. She was all right for a while and then her frequent urinations returned and we took her to see another doctor who gave her Zinnat Suspension antibiotics after doing a test. My girl said she doe not feel pain when urinating nor does she have a fever. She has finished her zinnat and I see no improvement. Is it too early to tell if Zinnat is working for her? We also make drink lots of water. I m very upset. What can I do?
Question Category : UTI
My 3 yr old daughter has had UTI last year and this year. It has been treated with antibiotics. An Ultra sound was done and the result was normal. She did not let the VCUG be performed as they were unable to put the catheter. On reading some of the symptoms of UTI I have discovered that she does have sometimes constipation problem, wasn't drinking plenty of fluids and cleaning the area after urinating. All these problems have been rectified now. Her pediatrician recommends we try the VCUG again. My question is if the ultra sound is normal and the VCUG painful for her is there any other method which will be less painful for her.
