Question Category : Urine stones
My son, age 43, has had two attacks of kidney stones, and we are much concerned. We think he passed the first one, but now, 3 months later, he is having another attack. Although the Dr. says diet has nothing to do with it, we are asking if his diet (lots of canned tuna fish) may be related. Is there a table of foods that we can access telling which foods to avoid, and which foods can be helpful in treating this condition?

MY SON, 13 HAS BEEN PASSING SMALL KIDNEY STONES SINCE OCTOBER. HE IS NOW PASSING SOMETHING THROUGH THE URINARY TRACT WHICH APPEARS TO BE OF TISSUE MATTER. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT THIS COULD BE?

PLEASE NOTE MY CORRECTED E-MAIL ADDRESS!! Dear Doctor: My 13 yr. old son has been suffering w/on-and-off stomach aches (I thought it happened because he has very little appetite & that it might be hunger pains), however, last night he started w/a very bad stomachache which then moved to his right side, down into the groin & around his lower back. He also told me that he feels a burning sensation when urinating. He has a pretty high pain tolerance & told me this has been happening for approximately 6 weeks! This seems to me to be a kidney problem, possibly kidney stones. Today, he still has pain but is very active (he was diagnosed w/ADHD @ approximately 6 years of age & takes Concerto on weekdays for school & homework purposes). Today is Saturday so none of our physicians are in their offices. Should I take him to the emergency room today or, since this has been going on for so long, can I wait to make an appointment for him on Monday? He has been complaining of the stomach ache on & off this week but now the symptoms & pain seem to be escalating. I could certainly use your advice @ your earliest convenience -- Thank you so much from a worried mother!
Question Category : Urine stones
My daughter has been in and out of doctor's offices as well as the hospital regarding kidney stones, which were found on x-rays and ct scan. The pain is very intermittent. She can be in enough pain to vomit or in no pain at all. She will go a couple of days with very little blood in her urine and then several days with so much blood in her urine that it is brown and you cannot see to the bottom of the container. We have been straining her urine for two weeks with no stones passing. It has been confirmed that she has three kidney stones measuring 3 cm each and they are located right on top of each other. She is finally going to see a pediatric urologist on Friday. The other doctors that she has seen have told us to have her drink as much liquids as possible and just try to have her pass it. At what point, is enough - enough? She is eight years old and has missed a lot of school. Her father has had eight kidney stones in his lifetime and my mother has had two. We have health insurance so it is not like we cannot pay for some kind of other treatment. I know doctors want to take the conservative approach and I appreciate that to a certain extent. If you have any suggestions, I am open to them.
