Question Category: Breath holding Spells
My daughter has been having more frequent spells of crying so hard that she loses her breath. My husband and I have witnessed these spells each time that they've occurred. We both agree that she is not doing this to get our attention. I do not have a hard time admitting that my child can be bratty, if I saw that she was having these spells to get her way, I would be the first one to confirm it. We have noticed that each time that she's done this, she's very tired and irritated. So anything could prompt her to cry the point of LOSING her breath, not HOLDING her breath. The same thing has occurred each time; her eyes begin to roll and/or become cross eyed, her lips turn blue, her body becomes limp. She goes from crying really hard to losing her breath in a matter of seconds. Once she does regain her breath, her body and eyes become normal but she's not responsive. She'll be looking straight at us as we're trying to talk to her and she doesn't respond until 10 to 15 seconds after regaining her breath. These occurrences are really scary. I've been calm through the first two, as my husband goes crazy. This last spell she had last night, I did lose it. I'm beginning to think there's something serious that needs to be addressed. But, according to her pediatrician that we visited this morning, he told me not to worry about it. That this is not serious and that there is nothing that I can do. He said that her body will automatically kick in to regain her breath. He didn't see any need to run any kind on tests on her. He didn't check her while she was in the office with us. I would be fine with his answer if only he would ease my mind and run some tests to make absolute sure that there isn't any underlying health issues that need to be addressed. My mind could use a second opinion. What would you suggest and is there anything that you could add to what her pediatrician has said?
