Question
Why do red blood cells do not have a nucleus while the white cells do?
Answer
The immature form of RBCs have nucleus which on maturation undergo programmed cell death and the nucleus is extruded out of the cell. As a red cell matures, the nucleus undergoes karyorrhexis, meaning the
nucleus degrades. The nuclear chromatin is dispersed into the
cytoplasm of the cell. These fragments then escape the cell.
