Question
My five year old step-son has been diagnosed with a slight case of CP. It has recently come to our attention that biological mother has genital herpes and did during time of pregnancy and for some years prior to pregnancy. Biological mother also has had severe cocaine/substance abuse problems before and after pregnancy (during pregnancy unknown but suspected). Could the cocaine use and genital herpes be the cause of his CP (child was delivered vaginally)? He has also been given a diagnosis of "global delay" and "mental retardation". Could these have been caused by mother's addictions and infections? PLEASE HELP
Answer
Genital herpes may lead to infection in the baby that predominantly affects the eyes, skin and brain. Cocaine abuse in pregnancy leads to small for gestational age babies, mental delay and learning disabilities. Before labeling that the CP is due to the above mentioned causes, an MRI of the brain would be worth while to determine if it is due to the above causes.
