Question
My 7 year old nephew has an abscess tooth towards the back molars, a dentist wants to pull it and then do a root canal, this doesn't seem right. Any advice? My daughter had oral surgery today to correct mesiodens, I mentioned this to the surgeon and she disagreed with a root canal... Help!!! Please!!!
Answer
An abscess is indicative of an infection. Root canal therapy is usually the treatment of choice.
Unless the tooth is unrestorable, only then is the tooth extracted. A seven year old with an abscess in one of his molars, should ideally be root-canalled, not extracted, unless the dentist has some other reasons for the same. Please do have a radiograph taken of the same and take a second opinion from a pediatric dentist.
