Question
My 17 month old son has had a stomach virus for 5 days. He has not vomited in 3 days and is eating very well and taking in fluids well. However, he still has very loose and green stool (sometimes smells very bad), and he wakes up in the night from gas pain. He has been on a bland diet, including some crackers, pasta, and apples & bananas. What can I about his stool and can I start to give him milk again.
Answer
The intestinal juices are green in color and if a child has green colored diarrhea, it means intestinal hurry. It does not signify a viral diarrhea or a bacterial diarrhea. Just ensure that he takes lot of fluids to prevent dehydration. If the diarrhea still persists for more than 2 days, it would be better to do a stool examination and confirm the type of infection as well as detect whether he is milk intolerance
