Question
I am a school nurse and have been reading reports of the increase of children with Hypertension. Do I need to start BP screenings in school? Where can I find the normal readings for each age range, my pediatrician’s book is old? Do you have suggestions for approaching the local physician for support in BP screenings?
Answer
It has been found that adult onset kidney diseases have a basis from childhood. Ideally every school going children should have a urine test and blood pressure monitoring done once a year to detect asymptomatic kidney disease in them and treat accordingly. This screening program is already being done on a regular basis in Japan.
Regarding normal BP range, there are charts available depending on age, weight, height and sex of the child. Consult a pediatrician for the same.
