Question
My son (now 2 years old) had jaundice as a newborn and was treated with photo therapy. His blood levels returned to normal but his skin retained the yellow tint until he was about 16 months old. Was this normal? My Pediatrician dismissed it with one reason after another until she finally said she didn't know. I'm reminded of this because he now has irregular thyroid levels on a recent blood test. Any correlation?
Answer
One may need to correlate the yellow skin with the bilirubin levels in the blood. If the bilirubin levels were high along with the yellowish skin, one may need to rule out causes of jaundice such as hemolytic anemia, thyroid problems and Gilbert syndrome. If the bilirubin levels were normal, there is no correlation between the yellow skin and the jaundice.
