Question
My son found jaundice 1 day after he was born---after blood test the bilirubin count was 15 ---then the nurse provided him with a lamp and after three days after the lamp they took another blood test it the level was 10. Is it common that the level would go up instead of going down? How long does it take with the lamp treatment to show improvement? Thank you
Answer
Hepatitis A is usually a mild disease. However in adults and in 5% of children it may have a fulminant or severe course. Since, his bilirubin is rising and alkaline phosphatase is rising an underlying obstructive jaundice has to be ruled out
