Question
My 20 week ultrasound scan shows that my baby's left kidney is ectopic being located in the pelvis. How serious is this problem and what are its consequences in the long run?
Answer
At the moment, one would have to wait and watch and repeat the sonography after the child is born. An ectopic kidney means abnormal position of the kidney. It does not necessarily convert into abnormal function of the kidney. The function of that kidney can only be assessed after birth.
