Question
My son has had a persistent pain in his lower leg for about 3 weeks now. He rubs his shin, but now he says his ankle hurts. He limps occasionally and complains daily. He is 9 yrs old. Friends say it could be "growing pains". I'm just not sure. He does play sports but couldn't recall a specific injury. I'm just not sure what to do. He has a doctor's appt tomorrow. I am concerned, it's something serious. Could he have a calcium or vitamin D issue, lyme disease etc
Answer
Does he have a joint swelling or restriction of movement of the joint? If yes, it is unlikely that it is growing pains. Growing pains are more muscular and occur at the end of the day particularly after strenuous exercise. He needs to be shown to a pediatrician to determine if it is bone pain, joint pain or muscle pain to determine the cause and treatment accordingly. You may give him multivitamins, calcium and Vitamin C supplements.
