| Question : |
My 11 year old son (be 12 in December) suffers from nausea. It is mainly when riding in a vehicle, sometimes after several carnival rides such as roller coasters. But in the last several weeks he has been having the nausea while watching tv or basically doing nothing? I had been giving him pepto bismo and it usually helped, but yesterday started him on gaviscon because the pepto was not always working and when he was several months old he was diagnosed with acid reflux (he did not throw-up, his food would stay on his chest causing severe cramps/pain). He would also have terrible screeming bouts while taking a car trip longer than say 10 minutes. The gaviscon was recommended at just 6 months old along with thickening his feedings and not allowing him to lie flat. He seemed to have out-growned the symptoms until several months ago. Could any other things cause this other than reflux or motion sickness. Like fluid in the ears; sinus drip; allergies. I have also tried the motion sickness bracelets which sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. Any suggestions or remedies would be much appreciated.

Answer |
The above symptoms are related to motion sickness and needs to be treated with antihistamines. However, motion sickness does not occur at rest and this increase in the symptoms now may be suggestive of another pathology. Conditions such as ear infection, high blood pressure and acidity should be ruled out. Consult your pediatrician for the same. |
