Question
My daughter at the age of 10 months had corrective surgery for a Grade 4 kidney reflux. At the time we were told that she would need no follow up unless she had a break through infection. Since she has turned 3 in March she has had 2 infections and her Ped feels she needs to see the specialist. I have set her appointment twice and hope to see him soon. But I am looking for information as to why this might be happening. Her right kidney was not growing and the left had substantial damage at the time of the surgery and her ped feels that the kidneys might be damaged to the point of possible failure. Can you give me any information? Thank you for your help
Answer
A reflux may lead to passage of urine back into the kidneys which may lead to pressure changes and damage to the kidneys. If she already had scars on the kidney, one needs to keep on evaluating her for her renal functions, growth, breakthrough UTIs even if she undergoes surgery. You need to consult a pediatric nephrologist for the same. Read the articles on "VUR" and "UTI" on www.pediatriconcall.com for further information:
