Question
My 5 year old daughter has been having urination problems. She feels as though "she has to go" 20-30 times a day. Urinalysis has shown no sugar, blood, infection or protein in the urine; however I was told today she has a high number of crystals in the urine. Her father suffers from gout periodically, and sometime extremely painfully. Should I be concerned, and what's next? Thanks.
Answer
This increased frequency of urination may be seen with infection or passing crystals. If infection has been ruled out, one needs to do her 24 hours urine estimation of calcium, oxalate and uric acid to see if she is passing any of these in increased quantity. However, in the meantime, you can ensure that she drinks lot of water so that the crystals do not precipitate in the urine leading to increased frequency.
