Question
I wrote in about a query last week on the diet of my 9 month old baby. I was advised to introduce solid food to her & should be gradually weaning her off breast feeding. But it is recommended by WHO to continue breastfeeding till the child is 2 years old if possible. Please inform me why it was advised for me to wean off breastfeeding.
Answer
WHO recommends breast feeding to be continued till 2 years of age in infants in developing countries to prevent malnutrition due to improper weaning. Children should be started to wean from 5-6 months of age and should be on normal adult food by 1-1 1/2 years of age.
