Question
I have a 10 month old baby girl and have been weaning her from my breast for a couple of months. I gradually took away feedings until I was only nursing in the morning and at night. I decided to wean her completely yesterday, and my breasts are becoming engorged. I thought because I have done this gradually I wouldn't have the engorgement. How long will this last and is there anything that I can do to ease the pain?
Answer
Since your breasts are getting are engorged, you need to go slowly on the weaning. It still means that you are having a good milk output. Once the weaning is adequate, the breast milk will automatically decrease and it would be easier to stop breast feeding.
Regarding the engorgement, you can apply warm packs to relieve the pain. If pain is severe, you may require pain killers.
