SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
My 2 1/2 year old grandson has breath holding spells. Sometimes he is unconscious for up to 15-20 minutes. Everything that I have read says that they usually start breathing again in 1-2 minutes. Does this mean that my grandson may be suffering from something other than breath holding spells? I am very concernd about this. He starts out turing blue then becomes very pale. Please advise me on this. Thank you.
Answer

Read the article on "BREATH HOLDING SPELLS" on www.pediatriconcall.com for further details:

Breath holding spells may lead to unconsciousness. A child may start breathing but may remain unconscious for some time. The only other conditions that need to be ruled out are epilepsy and a heart disease. If your doctor has ruled out the same, your grandson needs to be dealt firmly for the spell as it is an extreme variety of temper tantrum and needs to be handled without giving into his demands.
