Question
I AM A GUARDIAN AD LITEN FOR A CHILD WHO WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM MOTHER BECAUSE AN XRAY SHOWED SKULL PRACTURE. NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. CAN CEPHALHEMATOMA HAPPEN AT BIRTH AND NOT SHOW UP FOR MONTHS. I NEED SOME ANSWERS BECAUSE THIS MOTHER IS UPSET BEYOND BELIEF. THE DOCTOR ORDERED AN XRAY BECAUSE THE BABY HAD A HUGE SWELLING ON HER HEAD. SHE HAD CARRIED THE BABY TO THE DOCTOR TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG.
Answer
The swelling for cephalhematoma may appear even after 3-4 weeks after birth. However, cephalhematoma rarely causes a skull fracture and fracture is very unlikely unless the baby had a fall or was hurt or has very osteporotic bones as in osteogenesis imperfecta.
