Question
My baby is 7 days old. She is fully breastfed. Initially she feeds regular. However the past 2 days, she has been sleeping a lot. She sleeps 5 hours straight this afternoon without waking up for a feed. I had difficulty waking her up & she fed for only 10 minutes. Last night she slept 4 hours before she woke up for a feed. Is this normal for a healthy newborn baby to sleep for such long hours without a feed?
Answer
Usually newborns sleep well if they have had a full meal in which case they may sleep for 3-4 hours at a stretch. However, if the infant has not had a feed for 3 hours, it would be better to wake up the child and feed in the initial days to prevent low blood sugar. Once the pattern of feeding has been established, feeding on demand can be continued.
