Question
A 4 year child diagnosed with Galactosemia and early cataract with minimal visual impairment. Will the cataract resolve on its own with a lactose free diet or does he need early surgery for cataract?
Answer
Once a newborn is put on a galactose-restricted diet, cataracts usually clears up on their own. Surgery is sometimes necessary in rarer cases.

It is believed that if the galactose restricted diet is followed, cataract do not develop in galactosemic children.
