Question
My 13-year old son has significant nipple and breast development; and a hard spot behind one nipple. After asking the doctors for three years if this is all normal, and whether he needs some testosterone.. I am always told it is normal. He is slightly overweight; 145 lbs. 5'3". Please advise me. Thank you.
Answer
First thing, your child is definitely overweight for a 13 year old. This causes a lot of fat tissue to deposit around the nipple area that makes it look as if the breast as developed. You need to ensure that he has some weight control program.
Secondly, during puberty, some boys have enlargement of the breast (occasionally one side, frequently both sides) due to hormonal surge. It is normal and it resolves on its own. Only if it increases too much or becomes, hard, he may require therapy.
