Question
My cousin is 21 years of age and is suffering from Hepatitis A for the last more than 45 days. All the tests on Hep-B, C, D & E have come negative. But his billirubin level is in an increasing trend. His latest report says: Total Billirubin - 24.5, SGPT - 43, SGOT - 107, Alkaline Phosphatase - 615. Is it normal Hep-A or could it be something else?
Answer
Hepatitis A is usually a mild disease. However in adults and in 5% of children it may have a fulminant or severe course. Since, his billirubin is rising and alkaline phosphatase is rising an underlying obstructive jaundice has to be ruled out.
