Question
I took my 2 year old daughter to the doctor yesterday, for symptoms of cough and runny nose that she has had since the end of October. There the Dr. noticed that all lymph nodes are swollen and the left is more than the right. The Dr. did blood test that will not return for possibly 2 weeks. Can you tell me what could be found with the blood test?
Answer
Enlarged lymphnodes in the neck along with runny nose and cough suggests an upper respiratory tract infection. It is commonly seen with viral infection such as infectious mononucleosis and also bacterial infection such as streptococcus and staphylococcus. These are usually short lived conditions and respond to treatment. If the glands persist longer, further tests may be required.
