Question
What does it mean when a 10 yr old has had a fever for 4-5 days and then couldn't walk one Am. We took him in to the ER and he had low WBC and high CPK?
Answer
Is the child having muscle pain? If yes, and since the child has high CPK, one would suspect a viral myositis. This is inflammation of the muscles due to viral infection. It is often self limiting and disappears on its own. Other possibilities are guillian barre syndrome post infection. One can comment further only on examination of the child.
