Question
My 5-year old son recently had a result of 700 in ASO test. His doctor, here in Dominican Republic, prescribed a 4-month treatment with Monomycin, which is a erythromycine suspension. The treatment began with 10ml every 12 hours for ten days, and then continued with 10ml at night for the remaining of the treatment. I would like to hear some opinions about this treatment. Isn't this too much antibiotic?
Answer
What were the symptoms that your child? An increased ASO titre is seen in cases of streptococcal infection. This infection may lead to a heart disease known as Rheumatic Heart Disease and hence it is imperative to treat it. Erythromycin is one of the drugs used for the treatment of streptococcal infection. It is given for 10-14 days. Long term low dose antibiotics are given in children with repeated bacterial infections and in patients with urinary tract problems to prevent UTI. Consult your doctor for the reason of the long duration of antibiotics.
