Question
Our daughter is 4 1/2 and has a UTI, with symptoms being primarily frequent urination and abdominal pain. This is the first incident she has had. Would you recommend that she go for further testing (some of the more advanced tests you mention on your website) at this time or do you only recommend the further testing after recurrent incidents? What is the standard rule?
Answer
Ideally a child less than 5 years with a UTI is advised an ultrasonography of the kidneys and the bladder to look for any malformation or defect and then if required further tests are advised. However, a plain cystitis (i.e. infection related only to the bladder) is usually not investigated further. However, if a child has symptoms of upper UTI (i.e. infection in the kidneys) then further investigations are required. Your pediatrician would be the best guide to decide whether your child requires further investigation or not.
