Question
My daughter went to the doctor yesterday and a test was done for anemia. She is 10 years old and was anemic or borderline normal for her whole life. The last time she was tested was about 3 years ago. This time, her hemoglobin was high. It was 17.3. Can you give me some information about what this means, please. Her Dr. just said I need to make an appointment to do further tests. Thank you
Answer
Your child has a high hemoglobin for her age. This condition is called as polycythemia. There are several causes of polycythemia. It is commonly seen in people staying at high altitude. There are other causes such as heart disease, bone marrow disorders or just due to no cause. There is an excess of red blood cells flowing through your body which may lead to symptoms like fatigue, headache, shortness of breathe, bleeding, dizziness, itchy skin. Your child will have to be investigated for the cause of her polycythemia and may require other blood tests. Depending upon the clinical symptoms and examination, the other tests that may be required are bone marrow examination and echo of the heart. Then depending upon the cause, treatment is initiated.
