SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
My 7-year old son has been having bowl movements in his pants for the past year and continues to urinate at night. We have tried every thing from punishments to rewards, and nothing seems to help. I've cut off his liquids at 6p.m. and prompted his bathroom visits every 2-3 hours. He says he can't control the b.m.'s and I'm so frustrated at this point, I'm not sure what to do. Is there some sort of medical reason this is occuring, or is he simply lazy? Please help!
Answer
Does your child have control regarding his stools? Does he pass urine only in the nights or is he incontinent during the day too? Had he achieved his bladder control before or is he incontinent right from the start? Does he pass urine very frequently and is it large quantity and what is his water inteke in 24 hours? These are some of the questions that need to be answered before it can be commented upon whether there is a medical organic cause or is it just a small bladder capacity? The commonest causes of incontinence due to medical causes are urine infection, kidney problems, diabetes and even neurological cause. Your child will require a complete evaluation and depending on the cause the proper investigations to give the correct treatment.
