Question
My four-year son has cerebral palsy. He is still not able to sit, talk, walk, and speak. How much time it take to make a cerebral palsy patient at least self dependent. Where can I found a specialist doctor for CP? Is this disease is curable? Is this disease repeats itself for the next issue? Please help.
Answer
The time taken for a cerebral palsy patient to be self dependent depends on the severity of the muscle involvement and the type of cerebral palsy and early intervention in form of physiotherapy. If a child has not achieved sitting by 2 years of age, then the prognosis is guarded. CP is not curable and the treatment involves physiotherapy. Regarding the recurrence in the next issue, it depends upon the cause that caused CP in this issue. Most of the times, CP is due to a non recurring insult and does not recur in the next sib.
