Question
Upon returning from a trip to Mexico, my 6 yr. old has been vomiting and has diarrhea. He is sleeping and does not have a temperature. Does this sound like it could be related to ingesting a small amount of water when brushing his teeth or just a normal flu-like virus? Thank you
Answer
It looks like a gastroenteritis probably due to contaminated food or water. Since, there is no fever, it seems unlikely to be a bacterial dysentry. Yes, viral diarrhea should be kept in mind. Amoebiasis should be ruled out especially if he has cramps in the abdomen and mucus in stools. If he is very symptomatic a stool examination would be worthwhile
