SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
My son aged 9 years has been facing the following problem for past two months. He gets fever frequently. Cures by medication and repeats after few days. Recently, I consulted a Pedeatrician and suggested following tests. All other tests are normal and SGPT is 124. Please explain what all is SGPT and what is the level of danger and suggest medication and cure. With kind regards,
Answer
SGPT is a liver enzyme and is elevated in hepatitis i.e. liver infections. There are several causes of hepatitis such as Hepatitis virus A, B, C, D, E, other viruses such as ebstein Barr virus and CMV virus. It can also be elevated with other infections such as malaria and typhoid. It can also be elevated due to drugs such as medicines for TB etc. Your son would require a detailed evaluation to come to a correct diagnosis. SGPT would require a serial monitoring to check for fall or rise. You need to be careful about his diet and avoid spicy and fatty foods and ensure that he gets adequate rest.
