Question
My son, who is six years old,has a baby tooth wiggling but I noticed that the permanent tooth has begun to grow in behind it even though the baby tooth hasn't fallen out yet. Do I have to take him to the dentist to have the baby tooth removed or will nature take its course. Thank you.
Answer
The permanent teeth erupt around 6-7yrs of age. They usually exfoliate the deciduous (baby) teeth and erupt, occasionally; however they erupt behind the deciduous teeth, and may or may not exfoliate them. Usual practice is to watch them for 6 to 8 weeks, before intervention by the dentist, and removal of the deciduous teeth. Since the tooth is already wiggling, i would say it probably will exfoliate, if this does not happen within 4 to 6 weeks, please do visit your dentist.
