Question
To Whom It may Concern My 4 month old son has had an amoebic infection resulting in blood in his stool and a diarrhea. The diarrhea recently returned along with severe vomiting and we ended up in hospital. I am now concerned about keeping him sufficiently hydrated. Can you tell me how I tell if he is hydrated? One midwife that I saw recently mentioned elasticity in the skin but I am not sure how to check this. Thanks
Answer
You can check for certain signs such as wetness of the tongue and the mouth. The other signs of dehydration are sunken eyes, no tears on crying, sunken anterior fontanelle (the gap in the skull bones), decreased urine output. If he is is maintaining enough urine output, the oral cavity is wet, the eyes do not look sunken, the hydration would be fair enough.
