Question
My 3 yr old daughter has had UTI last year and this year. It has been treated with antibiotics. An Ultra sound was done and the result was normal. She did not let the VCUG be performed as they were unable to put the catheter. On reading some of the symptoms of UTI I have discovered that she does have sometimes constipation problem, wasn't drinking plenty of fluids and cleaning the area after urinating. All these problems have been rectified now. Her pediatrician recommends we try the VCUG again. My question is if the ultra sound is normal and the VCUG painful for her is there any other method which will be less painful for her.
Answer
What we need to know is whether the UTIs that she suffered from were symptomatic in the form of burning urination, increased frequency of micturation? If yes, then she probably had cystitis that may not need further investigation. However, if she had fever, vomiting and the urine infection was picked up on investigation, then more investigations may be required such as VCUG as UTI in children less then 5 years is not very common and if it occurs recurrently then we need to rule out an underlying anatomical defect.
