Question
I am a nurse and am searching for info. on drooling. My son is 3 yrs old and drools like crazy. This started at age 1 and he has all his teeth. Someone suggested lazy facial muscles. Thanks
Answer
Drooling is normal in babies upto 18 months of age. Occasionally some children may have drooling upto 4 years of age. Drooling may otherwise occur due improper control of the muscles of the mouth, or due to abnormalities in the shape or function of the jaw, face, or mouth. It is commonly seen in children with cerebral palsy or other brain problems. Some children who drool have difficulty with the normal swallowing of saliva. Some drugs may also cause drooling. There are drugs as well as simple surical procedures available to control the drooling. What you need to establish is how frequent and how constantly is your child drooling? Also please do consult your doctor for complete examination to evaluate the cause of drooling in your child so that further treatment can be started. Hope this answers your query
