Question
My 17 months daughter wakes up with swollen lids every morning for the last 2-3 weeks. I have taken her to our doctor who asked for a urine test to check protein levels. It turned-up normal. He ruled out ear infection and sinus problems and suggested it may be an allergy. How do I get confirmation of this? She does not seem to have any other symptoms. No redness, no pain or itching or any discharge. The swelling diminishes during the day and by evening it is usually not there at all. Some days it appears to be worse than others. Please let me know what you think.
Answer
Your doctor was correct to do the protein level in the urine. Even if one reading is normal, a repeat test may be warranted or even a 24 hour sample of urine for testing for proteins may be required. If the 24 hour level is normal, then the other possibility to rule out is conjunctivitis and allergic phenomena. If everything is normal, a blood level to check the blood proteins may be needed.
