SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
My granddaughter, aged 10 months, has a low neutrophil count, 400 . . .the test was basically a mistake and the haemotologist says that everything else in the blood tests is good. . . hence, no other abnormalities . . .she is strong, alert, smart, healthy, have never been sick in her entire 10 months of life, is developing beautifully . . .her pediatrician is "shocked" that she has such a low neutrophil count and told the hemotologist that she is one of the healthiest babies that he has ever seen. My question is to what extent it is important to follow up with more, and other invasive procedures, such as a bone marrow transplant. If this test hadn't been done, the parents would NEVER have suspected that their daughter might be at risk . . .for ANYTHING . . . Is it possible that she will grow out of this and/or that the test might have been skewed due to her age? Please advise. Thank you.
Answer
In the first place, what was the indication to do the test? If she had fever, the low count could be due to supression by the germ itself and a repeat count after 15 days would be needed to check whether it has returned to normal. If the count is still low, but she is asymptomatic a condition such as benign neutropenia should be considered after ruling out other causes. Benign neutropenia as the name says is a benign condition and the children usually lead a normal healthy life.
