SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
My daughter is 6 months old. When she was born the doctor said she has an anterior anus. The only visually thing wrong with her is that her anus and vagina are very close together. No test have ever been done. Since she was born we have had problems with constipation. We usually have to give an enema once a week. She is on baby food so we make sure she doesn't have rice, bananas, apples etc. My question is what is the difference in an Anterior anus and an Imperforate anus and do you have any information on these conditons? I have had a terrible time finding any information.
Answer
Both imperforate anus and anteriorly placed anus are part of anorectal malformations ie. some malformation around the anal region. These lead to constipation either mild or severe depending upon the type of malformation. Anteriorly placed anus as you correctly mentioned is a state in which the anus is very close to the vagina. It is "Low" anorectal malformation. Imperforate anus if high up is an emergency and requires urgent operation to allow the stools to pass. A low imperforate anus would have a fistula to the vagina and the stools would pass into the vagina. An operation is required to close that fistule and open the anus to allow the stools to pass through the anus. THe main treatment is treatment of constipation in both the conditions.
