Question
My second child is male 2yrs and 6 months he has started holding pencils and scribbles, and does most of the thing with his left hand. Should we make him change his usage of hand, is it ok to let him use his left hand for writing? In fact he eats food using his left hand. my first child is a righty. Both me and my wife are righty. Kindly suggest if we should let him do the way he is or make him consciously use his right hand.
Answer
Handedness in children usually develops by around 3 years of age. However, children may use both theirs hands till 6 years of age. Handedness has a lot of genetic component. It would be surprising to know that most left handers come from right handed families. Parents should not try to counter natural tendencies to use one hand or the other. Trying to turn a lefty into a righty or vice versa would most probably be unsuccessful and could very well cause significant difficulties for the child.
Some well-known left handed individuals include:
Martina Navratilova
Charlie Chaplin
Leonardo da Vinci
Picasso
Napoleon
Bonaparte
Julius Caesar
Benjamin Franklin
Albert Einstein
Michaelangelo
Pablo
Picasso
Alexander the Great
Prince Charles
George Bush
Bill Clinton
