SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
My 3yr old son recently had done some blood tests because he had a couple of episodes of "falling" asleep and was extremely difficult to wake up. I am a little concerned over his test results and am looking for information to see whether I should get a 2nd opinion. The dr told me he didnt "think" it was leukemia or a bone marrow problem, so that is why I am a little concerned. He said to come back in 3 months for him to be rechecked. his test results were as follows: WBC=6.7 ;GRA%42.2 #2.9; LYM% 51.1 #3.4;MON%6.7 #.4;RBC=4.59;HGB 11.9; HCT 35.4; MCV=77; MCH=25.9; MCHC=33.5;RDW=11.0;PLT=267; AND MPV=7. The dr told me to give him an iron fortified vit, which I did. My son seems fine, very active for the most part, except for the few days he had the "falling asleep" problem. Based on his blood test results, would anemia be the cause of all several of the tests being low? 90 days doesn't seem long, but if something is seriously wrong it could be critical time lost. I would appreciate any input you can provide. thank you,
Answer
His Hb, MCV and MCH appear to be low that is suggestive of anemia most likely due to iron deficiency. Your doctor has done the right thing by asking you to start iron supplements and to come back after 3 months to check the rise in hemoglobin. Iron deficiency in children causes lot of behavioural problems such as irritability, lethargy etc. It may lead to increased fatigue and tiredness. These symptoms improve markedly within the first week of starting the iron supplements. Your child seems to be suffering from iron deficiency.
