Question
I work at a shelter for abused and/or homeless women and children. I would like to know the symptoms of pinworms and possible treatments. Thank you.
Answer
Pinworm infestation presents as excessive itching over the anal region especially at night. This is because the worm comes out the anus and comes to the anal skin causing itching. Sometimes live worms may be seen in the stools as white worms. The treatment consists of deworming with anthelminthics like mebendazole, albendazole etc.
