Question
This is a query I would like a pediatrician to answer. First of all let me congratulate the people behind this site. This is a wonderful concept. I wish you guys all the very best. My son is 2 years and 6 months old. From his age of 3 months he has been a respiratory tract patient. He had been admitted to hospitals 3 times with wheezing so far. This was till he was about 1year and 6 months old. He has since not had a single episode of wheezing from the age of 1 year and 6 months till about 5 months back he had been well without any problems. All his vaccines have been given on time. For the past 5 months he has been having one ailment or the other every month. Usually it is respiratory tract infections. The whole thing started off with typhoid ( Salmonella 300 titre H and O) about 4-5 months back. He was treated with Taxim o for 21 days. He showed negative after the treatment. After this every month he has Cold , Cough and Fever. The latest being episode of Vomiting and Diarrhoea 5 days back followed by cough. Which is under control now ( except the cough). Oral Rehydration was given. Vomistop stopped vomiting and Diarrhoea was treated with Normetrogyl. One more day's course left for normetrogyl. Lacto B given along with Normetrogyl to retain normal flora. What are the ways to improve his immunity? Are there ways to stop these recurrent infections and the use of antibiotics? Are these recurrent infections because of joining him in a play school ( play school is 4 months old). Please reply
Answer
Since, your child has had repeated chest infections of which predominantly were associated with wheezing episodes, hyper-reactive airway disease (in simple terms asthma) should be ruled out. Asthma in children would usually present as cough and in infants as breathlessness. Though your child's symptoms started at the age of 3 months, the symptoms persisted for a long time. Another thing that we would like to know is his birth history and what were the problems at birth. What is also important to know is whether he is growing well. If yes, other problems associated with repeated respiratory infections such as heart disease, GER seem unlikely. What you need to do is show him to a pediatric pulmonologist who will work him up for a hyper reactive airway disease and if need be then start him on a long term treatment with inhaled pumps.
