SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
When is routine blood testing done on toddlers and school age children? Is it necessary to do on a 2 year old whose veins are barely visible?
Answer
There are several reasons why a routine blood test may be required in a 2 year old. The commonest are to rule out infections, to find the hemoglobin levels in case the child is pale ( to rule out anemia). There are other parameters also that can help a doctor to make a diagnosis easier (like allergic conditions, worm infestation and even cancer). Your doctor may have advised it as he/she would have found it necessary to decide on treatment of your child. Do not worry about veins not visible, with smaller needles available nowadays, the collection is not that painful and is much simpler. Also, pathologists are trained to collect blood even in newborns, so there should not be a problem in a 2 year old. Hope this answers your query.
