SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
Please could you help. I have a friend coming up to see me with her children. Her eldest child (2 1/2 ) has chickenpox. He has spots now. I am worried about my children. I don't mind my 2 1/2 year old getting it, but I have a four month old. I am breastfeeding and he just started to get solids yesterday. I think I had chickenpox as a child. Is it also safe for my friend to see her sister who has just had her baby less three weeks ago? I would be grateful of a reply. Thankyou. I am just worried about the effects on the babies.
Answer
Chicken pox is contagious till the rash is still coming up. Once no new lesions come up and scab starts forming on the old ones, then the patient is no longer contagious and the virus cannot spread. Check with your friend whether the scabs have come and that whether new lesions are still coming.
