Question
My 22 months old daughter blood test results show a T3194. What is the significance of this level? What causes this high level? What steps should I take in getting this level reduced?
Answer
T3 is one of the tests to determine the function of the thyroid gland. A high value signifies high functioning of the thyroid. There are several reasons that could produce a high T3. The commonest in infants is transfer of high maternal T3 (from a hyperthyroid mother during pregnancy) which is a transient condition. The thyroid gland itself could be producing high T3 or in response to the signal from the pituitary gland. Sometimes, ironically in hypothyroid patients, T3 may be found high due to end organ unresponsiveness to T3. Hence, the thyroid gland produces more hormones to have an effect even though the patients may have signs of hypo functioning of the thyroid gland. Usually hyperthyroid patients present with hyperactivity, high heart rate, diarrhea, increased sweating and loss of weight. Hypothyroid children present with weight gain, intolerance to cold, delayed milestones, scholastic backwardness, slow heart rate etc. Depending on what child has presented clinically, the report has to be interpreted and further tests such as T4, Thyroid-stimulating hormone, USG of the thyroids may be required. Treatment would be in the form of Thyroid replacement in case of hypothyroidism and Anti Thyroid agents in case of hyperthyroidism.
