Question
My 11 year old daughter has a rather large red area on her forearm that is warm to the touch and has a pustule in the center of it. The area seems to be larger than it was last night when I first noticed it and now covers much of the underside of the forearm. The area near the pustule is tender to touch. She has no other symptoms and seems to be fine otherwise except for an occasional cough which is not normal for her. She is otherwise healthy and takes no medications. At what point should this be seen by our doctor? Is there some home remedy we should try?
Answer
She seems to be having inflammation (infection mostly due to germs)of the subcutaneous tissue also known as cellulitis. This now seems to be forming into an abscess (the area is red, tender warm with central pustule). You need to take her to the doctor immediately to start her on antibiotics and if the abscess is well formed to drain it or else the infection may even spread more.
